2024 Mazda CX-90 Performance

The CX-90 is the first Mazda to apply a new turbocharged three-liter inline-six engine that is complemented by a forty-eight-volt hybrid powertrain. Mazda says the powertrain is good for 280 horsepower in non-S models and 340 in S models. An inline-six engine is a hallmark of SUVs, along with the BMW X5 and Land. Rover Range Rover Sport, signaling Mazda’s desire to move its brand further into the higher class of the market. The plug-in hybrid version also uses the same 323-hp setup used in the European-market CX-60 SUV, including an inline-four, electric motor, and 17.8 kWh battery. During our preliminary pressure test, we tested each plug-in hybrid and the top-spec S model, both of which packed plenty of punch for city and turnpike driving. The 340-hp inline-six is specifically easy, but we weren’t happy with the long legs of the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters and found it best to let the eight-speed automatic shift itself. The PHEV version surprised us with poor exhaust gas observation and, when running on as much electric power as possible, brought the big CX-99 to site visitors without having to fire up the four-cylinder gas engine. Both added refined street manners with the athleticism for which Mazdas are renowned.
